Delancey UK Schools Chess Challenge
Delancey, a specialist property investment advisor and development group is the new principal sponsor of the UK Schools’ Chess Challenge. Previously known as the British Land UK Chess Challenge, the tournament began in 1996 and was an immediate success, with 700 schools entering, involving approximately 23,000 children. Last year competitor figures hit 63,000 and 1,900 schools entered. The structure of the tournament is simple, allowing the most inexperienced players to compete in the early stages, testing the mettle of the finest at the end.
Run by world-renowned International Chess Master Michael Basman, the Delancey UK Schools' Chess Challenge begins every Spring Term, and continues over four stages and eight months. In the first stage children compete week by week in schools all over the UK. Every child is able to win prizes, whether badges, gold spots, mascots, trophies and baseball caps, so every child has something to play for.
Currently the prize fund stands at approximately £20,000. The winner receives a minimum of £2,000 in prize money. There is also a significant monetary prize for the top Under 11 and the top female chess player.
